Did it come with iLife? If so, you have GarageBand and that is the BEST sound/instrument recoding software. I think the iBook even has a built in mic - if not, a cheep USB one will work fine.
If you don't have GB, try Audacity: I know it doesn't come with Tiger, but it's open source (totally free) and amazing - I've been using it for a while now to record my band and it's better that some programs I've bought for a lot of money!

If your iBook doesn't have a built-in mic, you may want to check out http://www.newegg.com among other places, as they have CHEEP prices on great computer accessories.
