The ATX 12v 4-pin cable that leads to my motherboard didnt read any voltage when i tested it and i tried every combination of switching the multimeters leads to different pins. When the two prongs from the multimeter were in the connector and touched each other it sparked however still no reading. I am positive i have the settings right and the right leads in the right slots on the multimeter. Is this power connection vital and if so what am i doing wrong?
Switching supplies are funny birds. They don't put out voltage until something draws current from them.
When you shorted the leads, it immediately drew current and sparked. If you held them shorted, it would draw so much current the power supply would shut down completely. This would happen in a couple of milliseconds.
Turn the PS off for a minute, then turn it back on.
Then put a resistance of abot 5-10Kohm across the points you want to test, and then take the voltage reading.
