I recently purchased a stick of 256MB SDRAM SO-DIMM PC133 memory for my older Sony Vaio FX240 laptop. The memory fit into the slot at a 45 degree angle, being 144 pin, but when I went to lay it down and click into place, it was too long and didn't fit into the slot. This was clearly the right memory, but was just too long from the gold connectors to top of ram. I found out I needed Non-ECC memory and not ECC memory which I had mistakingly bought.
Because Non-ECC memory has 1 less chip on the module (4 chips instead of the 5 on the chip I had) does that mean that they are organized on the module vertically from left to right, rather than horizontally in each corner and 1 vertically in the middle? This would make the memory module shorter and fit in the slot right? 4 modules logically takes up less space than 5.
You can see the 4 chips. The one I just returned had 5 chips and seemed longer from gold side top.
Yes, that's possible. ECC stands for "Error Correcting Code". This means that for each 32 bits of memory, there are actually 7 extra bits stored. This requires extra chips to store the extra bits. The actual height of the DIMM is really a function of the board layout, so the really important thing to check is the pin count and the width of the DIMM. Basically, if it fits in the slot, it's got a good chance of working.
