I brought a cheap compaq for £200 in the uk and it had a core duo 3ghz intel processor in it and a motherboard. To cut a long story short pc world said i could not upgrade the graphics card so i went and brought a new motherboard and cpu a good amd 64x x2 4800+ 2.4ghz and motherboard and got a electrician to install it. Now it i got xp pro running on it and all is well the graphics & speed of it is much better then the crap intel core duo.
Only thing is that i am worried incase anything overheats.
There was no thermal paste with the cpu only a fan and heatsink.
YES all CPUs need thermal paste between the chip and the heatsink or heat transfer will not work properly. The good thing is is that when the CUP gets too hot, the motherboard will automatically cut power. However, if you want to use your computer for more than an hour, or want your cpu to last for more than 6 months, it NEEDS thermal paste
A CPU running at 30 degrees, whether it be F or C, was measured improperly. NO CPU is that cold unless it is off. I would imagine a CPU w/o paste would be running at about 130 F, not 30 F. And that is way too hot- you are looking for between 95 to maybe 120 at the most.
If you are talking about the paste that comes on the bottom of the heatsink, then yes that is thermal paste.
