Does a Core 2 Duo notebook processor (T9600) have a thermal paste or its equivalent already on it?
I was looking at the little instruction pamphlet that came with my new-in-box Core 2 Duo CPU, and it doesn't suggest anything about thermal paste. The top side of the core (where the thermal paste is applied, I know) has a mirrored-silver square elevation in the middle, and there's this maybe 0.5 mm line of what looks like dark gray, dried gel surrounding the square. Is this the stock thermal compound? And from what I gathered from forum-crawling, is it fine to install the CPU without adding any additional compound if I'm not going to be overclocking? Yes, it is the thermal paste You found. It is applied in the factory already to avoid any further damage and overheating on used components.
You should not dismantle this parts or replace it unless You want to make some upgrade.
