I'm going to be swapping motherboards yet keeping the same CPU/Heatsink. Thus I'll have to separate the two.
Now as I recall the stock intel heatsink has the little square rubberlike compound, does that remain on the heatsink and become reusable?
I bought some compound anyway....
gotcha, just wasn't sure. The stock heatsink was more or less like a thin pad, not like standard compound, wasn't sure if it was re-usable....
Thermal compound (pads too) cannot be reused. You'll need to completely remove the old thermal material from both the heatsink and cpu. You can buy a thermal material remover such as these -

but a high purity Isopropyl alcohol of 90% or better will work fine. You can find the alcohol at most drug, retail, or grocery store for about $1~$2. Just be sure that you use a lint free cloth (not paper towels) to remove the old compound, and do not use anything metalic such as a knife or razor blade to help remove it. On my rigs, customer builds and repair/upgrade work I use Arctic Silver 5 thermal compound, it provides excellent thermal conductance.
