A few days ago I noticed the fan on my PS3 was really loud....no clicking or clanking like it's hitting something - just like it was spinning really fast. The air is coming out faster but doesn't seem to be any warmer than it was before. Did Sony equip these things with a dual speed fan for cooling purposes or is my PS3 on the fritz?
Note: I recently moved the PS3 in my entertainment system....about the same time this fan thing started....but I do believe it has enough air flow. It has about 12" in the back and 6" on the vented side. Is that enough?
dont ever put you system into an enclosed entertainment system. the ps3 will blow out hot air but because its enclosed, eventually it will just be cycling in hot air and out even hotter air. I had my ps3 in something like this for a few days when i realized it was struggling to keep cool even after a short amount of time. take it out and set it next to the entertainment system. I would say the amount of space you talked about is not at all good enough. I am overly protective of my stuff and I would never put it in something with that much space. if your entertainment system has one of those flimsy back boards and you dont mind you should take it off and make sure the front is always open (if it has a door) while its operating. Give it some more room on the sides as well. a good way to test if it has enough air is to play it for a while and then put your hand/ arm in the entertainment system and if there is a noticeable difference in temperature in the surrounding space, then you dont have enough room for it.
