When I first bought my laptop, the fan was very quiet and only came on louder and faster when I was doing something pretty graphics-intensive. However, it now comes on a lot more often and when it's apparently not doing anything. I leave my laptop on all night, and sometimes I'll wake up in the middle of the night and hear it whirring away, but it doesn't appear to be doing anything.
Is this because I've installed a lot more programs since I bought the laptop, therefore there is a lot more going on in the background, or is this something to worry about? My laptop runs very cool compared to my previous laptop, so I presume the fan is doing its job. And I don't mind the noise, I just want to know if it's normal for laptop fans to get speed up then slow down intermittently.
By the way, the laptop is only two months old...I doubt it needs a service! It's always sat on my desk, it doesn't get dragged around anywhere.
Your laptop needs a service. Over time the latop will get a build up of dust and debris that collects inside the fan housing thus preventing air flow and heat dissipation. Because the processor is now running hotter the fan is working harder. If you don't get it sorted, the laptop will start to overheat and shut down.
