I have a computer that needs a new Heatsink and fan for the CPU. I removed the finger clips, but it is still stuck on with thermal compound. The system is not cooling properly. The fan seems to be working fine, so I was trying to replace the heat sink and fan to see if that is the problem. Is it possible to put a more powerful fan on it to cool it better?
thermal compound is not glue. if it doesn't come off, then it is glue, not thermal compound, and that is probably the defacto reason you have heating problems. thermal compound disperses the heat through a wide area, which is then dispersed through the heatsink. if all three are glued together (chip, motherboard, and heat sink) you should get a new computer, as I haven't seen a setup like this since a 486 i fixed in 1992.
however, if you want to try and salvage it, i would recommend a case fan. they are cheap and easy to install, and since i installed one, i haven't had any heating problems at all. also, it helps with dust.
