I recently bought a new laptop. The problem is the cooling fan on my laptop blows in short, hard bursts most of the time. It's loud and annoying. I'd rather it blow constantly instead of short bursts. What is wrong with the fan? What should I do?
The way fan works (i.e speed, when to turn it ON and OFF etc.) is controlled by the system BIOS. In some notebooks this is not properly programmed therefore the fan will stay off till the temperature reaches a critical level, then it will turn ON at full blast (then turn off as soon as it reaches a safe level). But in most notebooks this happens gradually. Check the download section of your notebook and see if there is a BIOS update. If there is, then that “might” fix it.
There are programs like NHC (Notebook hardware Control) that will let you manually control the fan, you can set it to always run at a low RPM there by keeping the temperature from reaching critical levels (meaning the fan doesn’t have to work at full speed = low noise). But I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS for non tech savvy people. Meddling with the fan can lead to hardware damages (if somehow the CPU overheats). Therefore leave it alone, unless you are competent enough and understand all the dangers.
If you are using Vista, then make sure your power mode is set to Balanced or Power Saver. Having it at Performance will make the CPU and the GPU run at unnecessarily high speeds. I normally set mine to Power save when I’m not doing any serious work (gaming or running CPU intensive apps). It will make the CPU and GPU run at low clock speeds = less heat.
