why is it that a desktop and a notebook can have the same processor example intel core2 duo
sureley the desktop must work faster and you would guess the notebook would just burn out,
a core 2 duo mobile processor and a core 2 duo desktop processor are not the same.

How can the heatsinks be different sizes? Mobile processors are designed to draw less juice, and run cooler... so they don't need as large. However, Laptops also run hotter than desktops, and will shut down if used in temperature situations that would not shut down a desktop. Mobile processors are also designed to not run at Max speed all the time. Mobile processors are variable speed. They are designed to only run at their fastest rated speed when the demand is greatest.
Desktop processors DO work better, and as a trade off, they use more power. There, you can see that there are some 25 watt Mobile Core 2 Duo chips... while my desktop AMD Athlon 64 x2 6400+ draws 125 watts. Sure, I can run at 3.2 ghz all the time, while that 25 watt chip can peak at 2.8ghz on occasion. It's a trade off.
If you could somehow fit a desktop cooling system on a laptop, and force the mobile processor to run at it's max speed all the time, then it wouldn't overheat and shutdown. If you want to see what I mean, download some benchmark software, and leave your laptop with it's core 2 duo processor running that testing software for a night. See how hot it gets, if it doesn't shut down. That extended heat can actually degrade the fans performance in a short time.
