My gf's macbook has had a problem for quite a while now, where the backlight would shut off if the lid were set at about a 45 degree angle in relation to the keyboard. That small area/position slowly increased, to the point that she could really only operate the computer with a working backlight when the screen was tilted at a less than 45 degree angle. It seemed to me like a broken flex cable inside the hinge mechanism, but my expertise is limited to USAGE of PCs...not hardware of macs.
Does anyone have any insight on this issue? The computer is very clearly still working, and still displays things on the screen, but they're nearly impossible to view without the backlight. The hard drive still makes its old sounds, etc...
Any insight on this issue would be greatly appreciated. We know that it's possible that her only option might be just to take it to an authorized repair location, but if there's anything we could try short of that?
The guts of a macbook are no different than those of a PC, except maybe the components' layout. I would agree that it is most likely a bad flex cable/bad connection. Hopefully your friend's mac is still under warranty.
