Ran engine with garden hose water hooked up, seemed to run just fine, put boat in lake, overheated quickly!
Was the pressure from garden hose pushing fresh water through cooling system to cool engine, and now without that pressure it will not draw lake water? It has a belt driven starboard side low, also has the original GM pump for circulation. My assumption is something happened to the raw water pump. The big question is, is there a water pump in the outdrive to supply the raw water pump, or does the belt driven raw water pump do it all?
Your version has a seawater pump mounted on front of engine down low and off to the side. The circulating pump is on front of engine directly in the middle.
Yes a garden hose under pressure will pass water thru a bad impeller under pressure.
There is no pump in the outdrive on this mode;
If you have the lower unit in the water look at seawater pump it has two hoses .You want to follow the hose that runs up to the thermostat housing and remove it briefly and start engine . You should have a good solid flow. .Briefly rev up engine and flow should increase then reconnect the hose . If all is good.
When was the last time you replaced the impeller if you cant remember then its due
There are only two other areas to look at . Thermostat stuck or clogged risers and manifolds
My bet would be to remove exhaust riser and see if the 4 slots around the exhaust ports are packed with rust .
