I am looking to upgrade my processor to dual core and was wondering if AMD Opteron Dual-Core 270 2GHz Processor would fit into my Compaq Presario SR2002X and if not what type would? Or is there a site that would tell me what type motherboard i have and what processors would fit into it?
The Compaq has an AM2 socket which has 940 Pins, while the Opteron needs an Socket 940, although they have the same amount of pins there are differences. From wiki, the Socket 940 processor will not fit on an AM2 Socket. So you cannot install it on the board. Because they physically limited on the Socket... The links should show you the differences.
The motherboard used is an Asus A8M2N-LA and no details are on the their website. HP/Compaq of coz gonna tell you that you'll void the warranty etc as well.. And they proberly wont have much support for it either.
No need to have an Opteron processor, you could buy an consumer processor such as the Athlon X2 6400+ and i believe with a bios flash you could even have the Pheonom Tri/Quad Core processors not sure. Since you have an consumer type board.
