I often find myself lacking the "right" wire for the job...if I need a patch cord, I have a crossover cable; if I need a crossover cable, I have a patch cord; I never seem to have a loopback plug because they keep dissapearing.
So I'm wondering, would it work to build a cable (or adapter) that has all 3 in one? Like 2 loopback plugs connected together?
I got the idea from a "recieve only sniffer" I saw on one site that had 3 ends on a patch cord...but I'm not sure if it could work and until I get to work I won't have any tools or spare cable to test with...and then I can only try it if I can find some bad cables that are trash already.
IF it could work, I know it will be half-duplex but that's better than nothing. I could keep it in my bag as a universal cable.
You cannot connect transmit and receive together. What you need to make is a programmable cable. There are a number of ways that you could do this. Make two cables that are RJ-45 to DB-9 female connectors. The make a number of male to male DB-9 cables that give you either a straight through or a crossover or a roll over cable. The other option would be to make a RJ-45 to DB-9 male and a RJ-45 to DB-9 female. There is a tool that you can get fairly cheaply that allows you to remove the pins on the female DB-9 connector and reconfigure the leads. The last possibility would be to cut an Ethernet cable and connect to make a circuit board and use plug in connectors to put straps between the leads to get the configuration that you want.
