Backing up from internal HDD to the external drive with drive imaging software.
The specs for the eSATA card say "up to 3Gbps", but my backup software is reporting about "400 Mb/s" without anything much else happening on the laptop and the backup task configured for "high priority".
What performance should I expect from this configuration? This seems slow to me based on the performance specs.
Also, the host controlled in the BIOS is configured for SATA and not AHCI. Would changing this have much affect on the performance in this scenario, and is the ExpressCard agnostic to this setting, or would it cause problems?
3Gbit/s is the theoretical maximum transfer speed of SATAII, and it's only actually approached by solid-state drives (extremely expensive and not commonly used with eSATA). 400Mbit/s is quite typical for any hard drive, really, so changing various settings won't really help at all. It's just the drive speed limitation.
