Ghz Processor Socket

If my system can only Handle a 2.5ghz P4 Intel, what would happen if I put in a 2.8 ghz P4 Intel processor?
My pentium just burnt out cause i put the fan on the wrong way, so I have another P4 but it is a 2.8ghz one. The system I have can only handle up to a 2.53ghz P4 . They are the same 478 socket. Will the 2.8 ghz processor just operate with less performance ? Or will it burn stuff up and destroy the motherboard? Will it even turn on? Any help before I try this new P4 would be much appreciated .
Just because they are the same socket doesn't ensure compatibility. If the processor was manufactured after the motherboard it may not work. You can go to the support website for your motherboard and they should have a compatibility table or list of compatible processors.
You might have to flash the BIOS on the motherboard to get it working. But in order to do that you would need a working processor.
