how to prevent overheating of computer processor ? or how to apply thermal grease or heat sink compound?
my computer(processor) gets overheated. i have removed the original heat sink compound and pasted a new heat sink compound 6monthsback. my processor is pentium 4 with 3.8 GHz .with HT technology. the temperature increase was gradually happening but one day it crossed 80 deg C and restarts. then after that this happens every time i switch on the machine. i am using it from 2005
If you put too thick of a layer of thermal compound, it's as bad as not having enough. There should be a thin layer, thin enough to 'see through' - but yet it should be evenly all over.
Did you change the heatsink fan/heatsink itself? That usually works well. Your heatsink's cooling ability is only as good as the fan that pulls heat away from the heatsink itself.
