I know I need one of these adaptors - http://www.mittoni.com.au/sata-to-ide-adapter-converter-p-1383.html to use a SATA DVD drive with an IDE motherboard...
But I don't understand the cables. Is the "1 x Serial ATA Signal Cable" the one that goes directly between the DVD drive and the adaptor?
Do I use a FDD to SATA power cord directly from the convertor or is the FDD supposed to be connected to the PSU and then another connector is needed to go from the PSU to the drive?
I just want to be sure I'm buying everything I need from the same place to save extra costs. Thanks for the help!
I use these exact same adapters for running my old IDE HDD's on my SATA MB.
What you will have to do is plug in the adapter to the IDE end into the motherboard. Then the adapter itself will need a power connector (4 pin power cord, same as your FDD uses). From there, you will need to plug in the SATA cable (the Serial ATA Signal Cable" as you put it) between the adapter and the DVD Drive. From here, you need to also plug in the power cord for the DVD drive. This is probably going to be a SATA power cord (see 1st link below). If you do not have a SATA Power cord, you will need an adapter cord (2nd link below). Plug the SATA power cord or adapter into your SATA DVD Drive.
That's all there is to it. Turn the computer on and it will all run. In short, the Data cable connects the DVD drive and the Motherboard, but both the adapter AND the DVD Drive need their individual power supplies, so you need 3 cords, 2 power and 1 data.
