We just bought and installed a slave hard drive, an ULTRA ATA/IDE Seagate 300GB, 16mb cache. It's formatted in NFTS. It took 6 minutes to copy around 800MB to it, but to transfer it back to the old HD it only took 30 seconds. How do we speed it up?
If you install a new faster hard drive on the same IDE cable as your older slower hard drive (1 being master - 1 being slave) your system ( IDE controller) automatically defaults to the slower speed drive. Thus, defeating the speed upgrade.
My advice is - copy the info you need from your older drive, to the new one and remove the old drive from your system.
Seagate has a program called DiscWizard http://www.seagate.com/support/disc/drivers/discwiz.html which allows you to copy the entire (old) hard drive data to the new one.
