My HP laptop dv2322la (dv2000 series, great laptop, BTW) suddenly lost its screen light. One can still see the images and characters of the screen (if one, for instance, points a torch to it) but it has no light. What is the problem?
My (very bad and uncooperative) technician says it is the "lamps" of the screen but he says I can surely only buy a whole new screen. I've seen on eBay that they sell "LCD inverters", would that fix the problem?

I've read that it could be the internal switch that turns the screen off when you close the lid (does that sound like the likely cause?) If that is the case could there be a way to fix it leaving the switching-off function intact?
go to a different computer repair person, all that is wrong with it is the back light is damaged, or the back light controller. there like fluorescent tubes, but behind the screen, they do get damaged and do need replacing sometimes, and that is all that needs to be done, the whole screen does not need replacing.
or it could be a switch that is damaged or stick, the switch that turns off the lights when you close the lid, which a competent repair technician could detect very easily.
the person you went to is trying to rip you off, go to someone else.
the switch is under the little flap were the hooks or clips on the screen clip into the laptop when closed, it might be that what is causing it, but it's not usually the first thing that goes, try pressing it repeatedly with something thin to see if the light flickers or does anything.
if your laptop shuts down when you close the lid, then using the switch or pressing it should switch off the laptop, if it does then it's not the switch that is the problem, it's the backlight or the controller.
