Are the hinges broken or is the motherboard damaged?
I have an HP G60-535DX notebook and the other day when I tilted the lid down a little bit to plug something in, and bent it back up again, I heard a loud cracking noise in the left hinge (I must add that the left hinge has been broken for quite a few weeks) and the LCD display just went very very dim, and when I tried restarting the computer the screen was totally black from that point on. I knew the laptop was on because I could hear the windows 7 startup jingle just fine. I thought that something was just disconnected, but when I took it to a local hardware store they said that the motherboard needed to be replaced and I thought that was absolutely ridiculous. So I did some more examining on the broken hinge and guessed that the problem must be the broken left hinge and not the motherboard. Some help would be greatly appreciated. My laptop is under an extended Best Buy warranty I must add.
It sounds like the hinge in question carried the data for the screen. The fact the laptop is still running Window points away from the motherboard failure. (almost all laptop's/pc BIOS will not boot into windows if there is a critical error present.)
Either way you'll need it repaired by the retailer or manufacture. What did Best Buy say? If it's under extended cover they will be obliged to repair it throught the manufacture.
The probability is the data ribbon for the screen is severed or damaged when the hinge went.
To be 100% sure plug in a monitor to your laptop display output, if you see windows working you can use that to support you theory.
Hope this helps
