Cheap Computer Equipment

Okay, here's what's going on. A few months ago my laptop screen started flickering-the picture would appear than disappear. It would do this at random intervals. Now, a few days ago the screen finally went dark. The strangest thing is that now when i turn the laptop on the screen lights up but display no picture. I can hook it up to an external display and everything works fine (on that external display). At first I thought it was with the LCD cable and so I replaced that. Then I thought it was a problem with the inverter, but an inverter just supplies power to the LCD back light. So now I'm lost and confused. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Could the problem be with the inverter? or the LCD screen itself? Or anything else?
