When I was 9 I remember reading a horror book that was connected with a funhouse or the carnival and it was set in the US.
One of the characters, if I remember rightly was scared of moths...not quite sure if that'll jog anyone's memory, but hey!
Finally, I seem to recall the cover being black and green with a drawing of a funhouse door that had a kind of werewolf paw with huge claws coming out of it.
I'm positive it wasn't R.L.Stein though, I hated horror books aimed at "my age".
