it would be simple except for i dont have a cd drive.
i have an asus eee pc 901 and i have a spare hard drive((mini pcie ssd) for it that i cant return. so i was thinking i would install ubuntu or w/e and dive into the world of free ware and community supports.
it has a connector that allows me to hook up the ssd drive to a usb port.
how would i go about installing linux onto the drive and then being able to boot from that???????????????????/
There are 2 questions: how to install linux on the eee pc and how to boot from the usb drive.
Boot from the usb drive: you can only boot from the usb drive if you have that option in the bios. When you turn your computer on watch the screen carefully and you should see a message (for a short time) press XXX key to enter bios. That key varies for different computers. It could be Del, space bar, any of F1- F8. You will have to keep trying until you find the correct key. When in the bios search all the options for "boot order"; that tells the computer where to look for a boot device. If you have usb in that list you can boot from the usb drive if the usb option is ahead of the hard drive on that list. If you do not have that option there is no way to boot from the usb.
How to install ubuntu on the eee pc: It is a little complicated but here are 2 links that explain how to do it. I don't believe you can install the full version but what they call the base or netbook versions.
