I bought a computer in 2003. It's an HP Pavilion a387x. It has an AMD Athlon XP (2.08 GHz) processor and 448 MB of memory. I occasionally upload video and I use the IEEE/firewire port. I run XP. It works fine.
I am going to buy a new desktop. I was told by HP Sales that because Vista uses so much processing power I would need to buy a much more powerful PC than I have now. Apparently, their lower end computers don't even have IEEE ports because they are not powerful enough to perform uploading DV. I'm not sure if I believe that. I felt he was just trying to upsell me. If this isn't true I would consider just buying an IEEE PCI card and a lower end computer. I'm trying to get an idea of what kind of processor/memory combination I would need to have while running Vista to be able to obtain an acceptable transfer rate for the DV. I don't need to multi-task while doing it.
You pretty much HAVE to run 2GB of memory with Vista to run it without major problems. It eats up so much memory just running in the background with no programs enabled. I am more specialized in XP, but I have used Vista, and it doesn't seem very CPU hungry, but definitely get loads of memory if you can.
