My Motherboard doesn't have SATA ports so I had to by a PCI card with SATA ports on it. When I put it into the motherboard XP won't boot. I was under the impression that I could snap the card in and boot into window from the HDD that's connected directly to the MB via IDE...what am I doing wrong do I need to change something from the BIOS? I don't want to put a drive into the PCI card (IDE or SATA) with an OS it wouldn't make sense when I have a direct connection with the board.

I am trying to "flash" my xbox 360 samsung drive so I can play back-up games off DVD's. The samsung drive uses a sata connector, since my old Intel board doesn't have sata connector I'm putting in a PCI card that has Sata so I can connect the DVD drive and flash the firmware. It's not for adding a HDD because the PCI transfer rate is too slow plus I have a direct connection for the HDD on the motherboard so it would be dumb.
Well, this is fun. Couple questions; Why do you have a hard drive with a SATA interface if your motherboard does not support this? And, why not just add another drive to the second IDE channel? It's worth noting that any drive you place, no matter how fast, will only send and receive data at the rate the PCI bus will permit. Usually around 66-133MHz. It's really not worth the effort unless you desperately need the extra storage space. As far as the boot problem, the SATA card is changing the primary boot device settings or is in conflict in some other way. If you have no SATA support for the motherboard, then BIOS has no idea what you just installed. SATA is a hardware configuration that comes with a motherboard and therefore, requires the necessary drivers. If you install an adapter, you will also need to have the driver for this unit. You really may have been better served with an IDE adapter. I'm sure what you want to do can be done, but without knowing your hardware configuration there is no telling how it may be done.
