Is it worth it at the moment? Because I hear gaming with CPU's is taking a leap forward in the near future. I'll be playing the latest games and wondering if its worth it or if I should just get a triple for or dual core cpu?
I recently built my new rig and asked myself the same question. What it really comes down to is your price point. I have a Q9550 running stock at 2.83. I'm a pretty avid gamer... Crysis, L4D, Fallout3, etc. Things run very smoothly and the core loads are always way low. That being said, the new i7 chips are pretty cheap for the 2.66 but you still have to invest in a somewhat expensive motherboard to support it.
A lot of the newer games do support multi-core threading but the amount of cores they support are dependent on the games themselves.
Honestly though, for gaming, it's more important to have a beastly video card and at least 4 gigs of RAM (I would recommend going triple channel memory and starting with a minimum of 6 gigs) so be sure to with a 64bit OS. Having quality items like these will be much more important than a quad-core CPU.
