Ram Dell Xps

I have a dell Xps, M1210, with 1 gig of ram. I want to upgrade to 2 gigs, maybe 4. Do I just buy 1 more gig?
In other words, can I just go to Fry's and but 1 gig of ram and add it to what I already have? Or do I need to take out the old 1 gig of ram I have and just install a 2 gig module? Thanks!
