See i ran a scan test on my system, it gave me some stats including my desktops motherboard number and all. Well its a D945GCCRG1 which seems to have decent upgrade features. The problem is, granted i should just get a new board, that it claims this board can have up to 4GB of memory, 2gb ram per channel. BUT, emachines and everything else related to the T3612 Model says 2gb is max. What restricts the motherboard from using the full 4GB potentiol, and can i go in and disable this scam lol.
i ask cuz id like to be using some nice 2gb stick (4gb total) until i have the extra money for a nicer mobo, so the ram wont be a waste.
There is a hard and fast upper limit to the native memory support on a motherboard for any computer based on hardware design. However, maximum memory support can potentially change over time. The reason for this is that your firmware--or BIOS--could be updated to address a higher capacity memory stick. You will always be technologically limited to a certain design-type of memory (e.g. DDR2 vs. DDR3), but the size/capacity of the memory sticks you can implement is dictated by your BIOS.
When I bought my DELL Studio XPS desktop, it was configured for a maximum of 12gb of RAM (DDR3). Dell released a BIOS upgrade to allow for 24gb of RAM (3 sticks of 8gb each). Never mind that it's quite cost prohibitive to go there, or that I'm getting by just fine with 6gb (3x2gb) for even the toughest games (Crysis) -- LOL!
