How can I make my computer run faster?
I own a Dell Dimension 9150. My parents previously owned it and it ran perfect. Theyve given it to me. Since then Ive been downloading driver cards Antivirus protection etc. It still ran fine. But somewhere along the way something happened that I am unaware of and it slowed loading time for EVERYTHING way down. I downloaded CCleaner reg cleaner and have used it to try and improve the failing speed. My virtual memory is fine. I have plenty of ram. Im just not sure of other ways to optimize my computer. I tried blocking some start up programs and it seemed to work slightly. Does anyone have any other suggestions? Keep in mind, Im not a computer expert so detailed explanation would be greatly appreciated. I dont want to act to late and have catastrophic failure.
p.s. If info is given and I dont quite understand and there's anyway follow up questions can be asked to the Answerer, please let me know how. Thanks again!
Some things to do would probably be to defrag it by opening start, all programs, accessories, system tools and Disk Defragmentor on XP, or search defrag on Vista. This can take a very long time, don't run other things while your running the defragmentor. Also run disc cleanup in the same place as the Defragmentor
You may also need to clear your temorary internet files by going to C:Users
or
C:Users
on vista or
C:Documents and Settings
on Xp
