How do i mend the hinges on my laptop?
the laptop screen is not attached to the laptop on the right, the screen is being held on by the hinge on the left.
This is a horrible problem but it is fixable.
I have only had to fix this problem with Dell laptops so that is what my guide goes on here.
First thing you need to do is open the laptop screen until it is at 180 degrees.
This means there will be no pressure against the broken hinge (in a worst case scenario as below)
Above the keyboard, there will be a little strip and if you look closely at one of the sides there will be a place to slot in a small flat-head screwdriver to pry it off. Once you have done that little bit, pry the rest of it off along the sides until you have removed it completely.
Note that there MAY be somewhere to pry it off at the back of the laptop too, at the hinges - the plastic bit also covers them.
If your problem is small, (more commonly) the screw should still be there and just needs tightened with a small star screwdriver. Be careful to use the right size otherwise you will destroy the head of the screw.
main problem I have come across:
The threads have been destroyed and the screw does not tighten. Not good - not good at all. Methinks they make it so that the threads of the screw is weaker than the grooves of the hole itself so you may just need to try another screw.
A bigger problem (less common - caused by gross mishandling - worst case scenario) will result in the screw having come out of the upper part of the hinge inside the screen casing. Hopefully this will not have happened but if it has, you will need to take the screen casing off.
To do this, remove any rubber screw-caps or other plastic caps off the front of the screen casing. Carefully! Unscrew each of the screws and pry the casing off with a flat head screwdriver from the sides. You will now be able to see where the problem is with the upper part of the hinge. if you have the screw, happy days - tighten it, snap on the screen casing, screw in your screws and put the caps back on to cover them up.

if you don't have the small screws go to a local computer retailer and ask if they have any. Perhaps bring your laptop to show them what you need.
My advice for everyone out there is to never pick up your laptop by the screen. With heavier laptops such as the Dell Inspiron 9300, this is a sure way of destroying those threads. The more well-built your laptop is, the less chance this will happen. The Inspiron 1300 is a great example of a well-built hinge system.
