Is RAM backwards compatable?
I have a Micro-Star International MS-6719, with 2.4 Ghz P4 and two 256 MB PC2700 (166Mhz) chips and am looking to buy a 1 GB stick and upgrade. My computer came with the PC2700 when I bought it, and I'm not sure if my motherboard can take PC3200 (If you know for sure, that'd help). I tried looking up the board on MSI's site but they didn't have much information on my board. I'd rather buy PC3200, because it's the same price and it will be more useful in the future if I decide to get a new motherboard.
Will the PC3200 work in my motherboard? And as a side question, would it be possible to mix a 1 GB PC3200 stick with one of the 256 MB PC2700 sticks?
The FSB is 133 MHz if that helps at all
if its both DDR-I it will work check with crucial.com memory configurator, i see them list 2700 and 3200 together as compatible.. your pc will simply slow the 3200 down to 2700 speeds.
it will be reliable but dont expect to overclock your system. the worst that will happen is you would need to pull out the 2700 stick. but no long term damage would happen for trying.
