They will work though not as good as the well known brands used by enthusiasts. Use the paste sparingly. A thin coat on the processor case is enough. There should not be any paste on the processor socket or the motherboard itself. I've used generic paste a lot but base of my coolers are lapped to near mirror finish. I've not fried a processor yet even if my processors are all overclocked.
And take note that the paste is not the cooler. It just helps improve transfer of heat from processor case to cooler. The thinner the paste and the smoother/flatter the mating surfaces are, the better the cooling of the processor.
